View from Skaftafellsheiði in southwestern direction. The floodplain south of Vatnajökull has been formed by the large amount of melt water from the ice cap. Particularly high discharges are measured during jökulhlaups, potentially destructive glacial floods caused by subglacial volcanic eruptions. River engineering serves to reduce the consequences of such events, and of high discharge in general.
