View from Skaftafellsheiði in southern direction. The huge floodplain south of Vatnajökull has been formed by the large amount of melt water from the ice cap. Particularly high discharges are measured during jökulhlaups, potentially destructive glacial floods caused by subglacial volcanic eruptions.
