The harbour entrance of Heimaey was almost blocked by a lava flow (right side) in 1973. Cooling of the flow with water proved successful and instead of being blocked (which would have been a disaster for transport and economy on the island of Heimaey), the harbour is now better protected from the rough sea. Furthermore, the thermal energy of the lava was used for heating in the following years and decades.
