View from Champ de Mars. The entrance tower to the 1889 World's Fair, designed by the company of Gustave Eiffel and made of wrought iron, has evolved to one of the most famous structures in the world, and a major landmark and symbol of Paris and France. Originally, the 324 m high tower was planned to be removed in 1909, after 20 years. Instead, it remained the tallest free-standing structure in France until it was surpassed by the Viaduc de Millau (completed in 2004).
