View up the Markarfljót in northeastern direction. This large floodplain has been formed by the large amount of melt water from the ice caps of Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. Particularly high discharges are measured during jökulhlaups, potentially destructive glacial floods caused by subglacial volcanic eruptions.
