Salineras de Maras

The salt evaporation ponds in this small tributary valley to the Urubamba Valley, fed by a natural stream, go back to pre-Columbian times. Salt harvesting by the local community is still ongoing in the early 21st Century - and in principle, every member of the community is allowed to occupy unused ponds.
