In 1952, almost the entire trough between these moraine ridges was filled by a glacier tongue, with a small proglacial lake at the front. That lake drained suddenly, the flood eroding a deep breach into the terminal moraine. Since then, the lake has redeveloped to a much larger size - however, at a lower level - due to the retreat of the parent glacier.
