View over the town centre in western direction. Located on a small island offshore the east coast of the Varanger Peninsula, Vardø represents one of the most remote urban places in Norway. The site has been populated since medieval times. In the early 21st century the population has shrunk dramatically due to a decline of the fishing industry.
