A run-down industrial area was converted into the Expo 1998 site. The area combines facilities such as the cable car serving as viewpoint, the MEO Arena (left side), and the Torre Vasco da Gama with its hotel (centre of the image) with residential, business, shopping, and transport functions. The main span of Europe's longest bridge at this time appears in the background.
