Panoramic view from Elevador de Santa Justa over the Baixa area to the Castelo de São Jorge in the background. This part of the town was completely reshaped after the destructive 1755 earthquake. A regular grid was used as the basis instead of the organic layout before, and - what was rather new at that time - resistance to earthquakes was taken into account when planning and constructing the buildings.
