View from the upper town to Inticancha and the hill of Intihuatana (left centre), the Intipampa (central part of the image), and the lower town (right side). The prominent peak appearing in the central background is Huayna Picchu (2693 m). Located on a ridge above the meandering Urubamba River at 2430 m asl., Machu Picchu might represent a former Inca citadel. The place has gained international attention in the early 20th century and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
