Callejón de Huaylas with Nevado Huascarán

View from the slopes of the Cordillera Negra to the highest tropical mountain worldwide (6768 m). The steep face of the lower northern summit was the source of two catastrophic debris avalanches: in 1962, the area of Ranrahirca (lower right portion) was badly affected. In 1970, part of the avalanche even jumped over a hill and destroyed the town of Yungay. The rebuilt town, Nueva Yungay, is visible near the left edge next to the site of the former town, Campo Santo.
