Bodie was founded as a gold mining town in 1876 at an elevation of 2550 m asl. In the 1880s it was the home of several thousands of people. Economy and population declined rapidly thereafter, and the last mine closed in 1942. Considered an authentic wild west ghost town, Bodie is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
