7th Avenue at the junction with 135th Street, view towards northeast. The neighbourhood of Harlem became a major African-American centre from the early 20th century onwards. Throughout much of the second half of the same century it had a bad reputation in terms of poverty and crime. The situation changed from the 1990s onwards, and gentrification became a well-known issue in Harlem.
