Harlem with Apollo Theater

WI_ny113.jpg

Martin Luther King Boulevard. The neighbourhood of Harlem became a major African-American centre from the early 20th century onwards, with the Apollo Theater (right portion of the image) being an important institution of African-American culture. Throughout much of the second half of the century, the neighbourhood had a bad reputation in terms of poverty and crime. The situation changed from the 1990s onwards, and gentrification became a well-known issue in Harlem.
