Katoomba | Blue mist over Jamison Valley

Viewpoint near Katoomba, view towards south. This phenomenon - related to exhalations from Eucalyptus trees - is where the Blue Mountains get their name from. They represent a section of the Great Dividing Range. Essentially, the Blue Mountains consist in a large sandstone plateau with steep or even vertical escarpments leading down to deeply incised valleys and gorges. The Blue Mountains were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
