Cape Flats

WI_za050.jpg

View from Table Mountain to the area sometimes called the "apartheid's dumping ground". From the 1950s onward, the Cape Flats became home to people designated as non-white, and townships such a s Langa (already existing before), Nyanga, Gugulethu, Crossroads, Mitchell's Plain, and Khayelitsha have evolved over the years. Most inhabitants of the Cape Town metropolitan area live in the townships of the Cape Flats. Many, but by far not all of the intitially dominant shacks have been replaced by solid houses.
